Gaming and Education: Can Video Games Be Used as a Learning Tool?

  • HI

Ive always been thinking about whether video games can be used as a learning tool. I'm sure we've all heard the common criticisms of video games being a waste of time and contributing to laziness. But as someone who spent countless hours playing games, I believe they can actually teach some skills, such as problem solving and critical thinking.

Good examples are, puzzle games like portal/2 force players to think creatively to solve challenging puzzles. Games like civilization and age of empires also require strategic thinking and planning to build and manage a successful civilization. Even games like Minecraft encourage creativity and resourcefulness in building complex structures and surviving in harsh environments.

Not all games are the same. Some games are onlyfor entertainment purposes and don't offer much in terms of educational value. However, I think we should look beyond the negative stereotypes surrounding video games and recognize their potential as learning tools.

What do you guys think? Have you ever learned anything from playing video games? Let's discuss!

Btw Minecraft Educationa Editon is a funny game but you need a school account to play it

  • Hey antihuman09,

Totally agree with you! Video games can definitely be more than just mindless entertainment. I've learned so many skills from playing games like problem-solving, critical thinking, and even teamwork. It's like leveling up in real life!

And you're spot on with the examples too. Games like Portal and Age of Empires really exercise your brain muscles. Who needs a boring old textbook when you can learn history and strategy through gaming, right?

Sure, not all games have educational value, but that doesn't mean we should dismiss the ones that do. Let's break those stereotypes and embrace the potential of video games in education!

So, have you guys learned anything cool from playing games? Share your experiences!

P.S. Minecraft Education Edition sounds awesome, but no school account means no blocky adventures for me. sad face
